(Deming) - On the first day of the 53rd Legislature in Santa Fe, Speaker Brian Egolf, Jr. announced committee chair appointments. Committee chairs reside over committee hearings and assist the Speaker in moving bills through the legislative process.
Candie Sweetser, State Representative from District 32 – representing Luna, and portions of Hidalgo and Grant Counties in the NM Legislature, was selected as vice-chair of the House Agriculture and Water Committee, and will serve as a member of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee.
Sweetser said she was pleased with her committee assignments, especially since newly elected legislators are rarely put on the Appropriations Committee. She also said she was glad to be on the Agriculture  committee since agriculture is such an important part of Luna, Hidalgo and Grant counties.
Sweetser said the Appropriations Committee passed the Feed Bill – or the bill that funds the legislative session – during its first meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The next few days will be focused on balancing the current year’s budget before moving on to the next fiscal year’s budget.

Sweetser’s office is in the Capital North Building, often referred to as the Annex room 203A and invites local residents to stop by if you are in Santa Fe.
