Candie Sweetser is a life-long New Mexican who understands, appreciates and embraces all that makes New Mexico our “Land of Enchantment.”

Candie is a strong advocate for agriculture.
Agriculture is the leading industry in Southwestern New Mexico, and Candie understands that local agriculture must be protected and fostered.
Our rural character and future depend on having a representative who values our family farms and ranches, and recognizes the challenges facing them.
Also, Candie and her family farm and ranch in Luna, Hidalgo and Grant counties, so she knows first-hand the demands being put on the industry.

Candie believes in small businesses.
Small businesses are the heart of our rural economies—they contribute to the uniqueness of our communities while providing stable, good-paying jobs. Revitalizing our downtowns and promoting local, small businesses must become a priority if our towns are to remain viable.
Candie understands the needs of industry.
For industry to prosper in southwestern NM, we need to wisely utilize our abundant natural resources and develop an educated, trained workforce. Candie will work hard to create a business climate that will attract and retain employers.

Candie is focused on education.
New Mexico needs to change direction on education, and get back to the basics: allowing teachers to teach! Too much emphasis on testing and paperwork is interfering with our teachers’ abilities to do their jobs. Unfortunately, it is our children who are paying the price. Candie has a master’s degree in Communication Studies from New Mexico State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Radio/TV Broadcasting from Eastern New Mexico University. She currently teaches public speaking for Western New Mexico University branches in Deming and Lordsburg. |
Candie recognizes water is our state’s most valuable resource.
In our arid climate, it is crucial that New Mexicans appropriately balance competing demands for our scarce water resources. Water is the lifeblood of our desert; if we want our farms and ranches to survive and our communities to thrive, we must conserve our water and use it efficiently.

Candie is concerned about ethics and transparency.
As a former Board member of the NM Foundation for Open Government and the NM Broadcasters Association, Candie is aware that political scandals have undermined the public’s faith in our state government. She will push for open, accessible and transparent government to help restore the public trust.

Candie values seniors.
Seniors add so much to our communities through their expertise and volunteerism, and Candie recognizes that we owe seniors a dignified and fruitful life with quality healthcare and ample support services.
Candie salutes veterans.
So many have given so much for our country, and Candie believes our veterans deserve our respect, gratitude, appreciation and tangible support. Service members who put their lives on the line should never be at the back of the line for benefits, services and care.
